As writers, editors, and artists, our thoughts and hearts go out to the family, friends, and colleagues of those killed and injured in the attack on Charlie Hebdo in Paris. This was not just an attack on cartoonists, writers, and editors; it was an attack on free expression worldwide and an attempt to terrorize and intimidate in order to inhibit the free flow of ideas.
Today we are publishing a series of Charlie Hebdo covers as part of a global action and show of solidarity with the French publication and with artists the world over. We chose a broad range of covers that celebrate the power of creative freedom and satire that are a necessary part of a free and open society. We believe that only through solidarity—in showing that we truly defend all those who exercise their right to speak freely—can we defeat those who would use violence to silence free speech.
Peaceful coexistence within diverse communities requires a climate of tolerance and an open exchange of views that includes criticism, humor, and hyperbole. The right to satirize, to question, to expose, to mock, even when offensive to some, is a bulwark of a free society.
