Best Debut Short Stories 2026: The PEN America Dau Prize
Best Debut Short Stories celebrates the most promising short story writers today. Selected by a panel of distinguished judges, these twelve stories are the 2026 winners of the PEN/Robert J. Dau Short Story Prize for Emerging Writers, which recognizes outstanding debuts published in literary magazines.
Each story is accompanied by an introduction from the journal editor who first published it, providing insight about what’s exciting in fiction right now, and recognizing the vital work literary magazines do in nurturing new voices.

Other Things Unspoken: 2024 Prison Writing Awards Anthology
Initiated in the wake of the 1971 Attica Prison Uprising, PEN America’s Prison and Justice Writing Program strives to bridge access to literary community for writers working under strict conditions of surveillance and censorship in carceral facilities across the United States. Its founding initiative, the PEN Prison Writing Awards, receives hundreds of submissions annually in the categories of Poetry, Fiction, Essay, Memoir, and Drama. Winners receive a cash prize, publication in an anthology series, and the opportunity to participate in the Prison Writing Mentorship Program.
Dreaming Out Loud: An Anthology of Migrant Writers
What do you miss the most about the community you left behind? What are your hopes and dreams for the future? How does your experience compare to your expectations? These are just a handful of the questions explored in DREAMing Out Loud: An Anthology of Migrant Writing. This anthology features original writing from DREAMing Out Loud, PEN America’s tuition-free writing workshop series for young undocumented and immigrant authors in New York City.

The Sentences That Create Us: Crafting a Writer’s Life in Prison
