A woman with long hair, seen from behind, raises her hand in a victory sign in front of a burning barrel on a street. Cars are parked nearby. A close-up of a pen writing text overlays part of the scene. Red and black colors dominate the composition.

India at 75

To mark 75 years of India’s independence, PEN America reached out to authors from India and the Indian diaspora to write short texts expressing what they felt. Together they make a historic document.

Abstract painting with vibrant red, orange, and brown colors on the left; bold text on the right reads India at 75 in red and black on a white background, celebrating India at 75 independence and marking 75 years of freedom.

A sepia-toned drawing of shouting protesters with fists raised appears beside the text Myanmar Spring Diary: Poems & Short Stories Written in the Aftermath of the February 2021 Coup.

Myanmar Spring Diary

The authors of Myanmar Spring Diary, a poignant collection of 10 short stories and 12 poems, reflect on the countless acts of courage and tragic losses in the wake of the 2021 military coup, and pay tribute to the Spring Revolution heroes.

Your Language My Ear

The PEN/Penn Your Language My Ear project grants Anglophone and Russophone audiences access to voices—many of which are subject to interdiction and censorship in their own countries, and banning and shaming in other countries—that are creating a space for commonalities of struggle and a future world of peace to emerge.

A graphic with PEN/Penn in the top left and the text Your Language My Ear in bold, with Language and Ear in red. The phrase repeats in English and Russian along slanted red and white stripes.

A group of people attend a panel discussion. Four speakers stand at the front near a screen displaying event information. Audience members are seated and watching. A banner with Cyrillic text hangs behind the speakers.

U.S./Russia: Writers in Dialogue

The Writers in Dialogue Program sent American authors to Russia for readings, roundtables, and literary events hosted by Russian writers and publishers and brings Russian authors, editors, and critics to the United States.

Russian Digital Entrepreneurs Visit the United States

With support from the U.S.-Russia Foundation, PEN America carried out the Online Publishers and Editors Exchange, which took place January 21-26, 2018 in New York City and California’s Bay Area. The goal of the program was to support development and entrepreneurship in Russia’s digital information and cultural sector through a professional exchange program. While the initiative was originally planned for mid-October, the visit was postponed to January due to unexpected visa issues as a result of the closing of U.S. consulates in Russia.

Four people are seated on a panel at the Council on Foreign Relations. One speaker at the podium addresses topics including insights from Russian publishers, while others listen. The room, with its large window, maintains a formal atmosphere.
