We feature a piece from our archives in memory of Chechnya-based Russian journalist and leading human rights activist Natalia Estemirova, who was assassinated six years ago on July 15, 2009. Her murder followed those of her close friends and collaborators: journalist Anna Politkovskaya (shot in October 2006), and the young lawyer Stanislav Markelov (shot in January 2009).Salman Rushdie reads “Wild Garlic Gatherers” by Natalia Estemirova, originally published in Novaya Gazeta on April 2, 2007, at the event “Bearing Witness in Chechnya: The Legacy of Natalia Estemirova.”
