[VIRTUAL] Translator-Editor Meet & Greet Series
The PEN America Translation Committee invited emerging translators to a series of virtual events where translators could network with industry-recognized editors and publishers. Each event had a limited capacity so participants had time for meaningful conversations. During the events, editors publishing fiction, nonfiction, poetry, children’s literature, crime, and more were on hand to chat about their presses and learn from translators. Participants came prepared to make connections, share expertise, and build relationships that could grow into professional collaborations.
This series was intended for emerging translators. Emerging translators are those who have published no more than one full-length book with a publisher in the U.S. or UK. Students enrolled in translation studies or creative writing programs were not eligible to apply.
Applications were evaluated on the basis of need. Preference was given to emerging translators from underrepresented groups, including but not limited to:
- BIPOC translators
- LGBTQ+ translators
- Non-NYC-based translators
- Translators with caregiving responsibilities
- Translators living with a physical, intellectual, or emotional disability
- Low-income translators
- Translators working in underrepresented languages/regions
- Nontraditional/second-career translators
Applicants were asked to provide a statement of interest/need and link to, or upload, at least one translation published in a magazine or journal. If they had not yet published a translation, they could include a sample of a significant work in progress, such as an excerpt from a novel, a short story, or five to 10 poems as representations of the translation work, along with a short explanation of what the work is and what their plans for it are. Samples were limited to five pages.
The deadline for applications closed on January 31, 2022 at 11:59pm ET.
This series was hosted by the PEN America Translation Committee. If you are an editor or publisher interested in participating, please contact Amanda Sarasien at [email protected].
