[VIRTUAL] Translator-Editor Meet & Greet Series

Row of books; on top: PEN America logo and “Translator-Editor Meet & Greet Series”

The PEN America Translation Committee invites emerging translators to a series of virtual events where translators can network with industry-recognized editors and publishers. Each event will have a limited capacity so participants will have time for meaningful conversations. During the events, editors publishing fiction, nonfiction, poetry, children’s literature, crime, and more will be on hand to chat about their presses and learn from translators. Participants should come prepared to make connections, share expertise, and build relationships that can grow into professional collaborations.

This series is intended for emerging translators. Emerging translators are those who have published no more than one full-length book with a publisher in the U.S. or UK. Students enrolled in translation studies or creative writing programs are not eligible to apply. If you are interested in applying, you can do so through this application form.

APPLY NOW

The deadline for applications is December 15, 2021 at 11:59pm ET.

Applications will be evaluated on the basis of need. Preference will be given to emerging translators from underrepresented groups, including but not limited to:

  • BIPOC translators
  • LGBTQ+ translators
  • Non-NYC-based translators
  • Translators with caregiving responsibilities
  • Translators living with a physical, intellectual, or emotional disability
  • Low-income translators
  • Translators working in underrepresented languages/regions
  • Nontraditional/second-career translators

In the application, you will be asked to provide a statement of interest/need and link to, or upload, at least one translation published in a magazine or journal. If you have not yet published a translation, you can include a sample of a significant work in progress, such as an excerpt from a novel, a short story, or five to 10 poems as representations of your translation work, along with a short explanation of what the work is and what your plans for it are. Please limit such samples to five pages.

This series is hosted by the PEN America Translation Committee. If you are an editor or publisher interested in participating, please contact Amanda Sarasien at [email protected].
