Activist Tavakoli has been targeted by authorities since 2006. He was arrested at his home on September 23, 2022 for his online commentary in support of the protests in Iran. He was released on bail on December 19, 2022. In July 2023, he was sentenced to 6 years in prison for “threatening national security.” He was imprisoned in October and his sentence was upheld in January 2024.
