The COVID-19 pandemic is poised to wreak havoc within our nation’s prison system. For Temperature Check: Covid-19 Behind Bars, we commissioned artist and writer “PunkRockSpock” (Jeremy Wilson) to illustrate this graphic narrative from Attica Correctional Facility, NY.

A drawing of a black hand holding a heart with rainbow stripes and a brown patch, surrounded by a purple, shadowy figure and a red rose. Above, a handwritten message about equality and bravery is written in purple.
A fierce, pale-skinned woman with dark hair and sharp red eyes reaches forward, revealing a large green, scaly lizard-like hand. Red and green text claims a conspiracy theory about COVID-19 turning women into deadly lizard assassins.
A black-and-white illustration with red accents shows a man with a mohawk looking serious. Text describes running out of toilet paper and soap, leading to pessimism, conspiracy, and a grim, Mad Max-like state of anarchy.
Hand-drawn poster with text about prison isolation and its effects. Images include a man on a phone, a biohazard symbol, and a person speaking into a phone. Red, green, and black ink is used for illustrations and lettering.
A cartoon zombie wearing a torn green shirt stands in front of shelves stacked with boxes labeled HAIRNETS 100. Text above reads, “They begin to use hairnets as P.P.E. when serving food…” A speech bubble says, “Because everyone knows... nothing stops a zombie apocalypse quite like hairnets!!”.
Illustration of the Statue of Liberty in chains, holding a book and torch, with text: We are told the courts are closed... It seems justice is not an essential service. Justice is not an essential service is in red.
A cartoon shows a lone inmate sitting at a table in an empty prison chow hall. Above, large text reads: On 19 March they began Social Distancing... But only in the chow halls. The inmate says, Uh, guys?!.
A stylized drawing of a woman covering her eyes with her arm, holding a red lollipop. Bold blue and purple text reads: On 16 March They Ban Visits. The artwork uses black, green, and purple accents.
A hand-drawn comic shows a worried person surrounded by text about the coronavirus starting in China, with thoughts like “Am I gonna get sick?” and “When will it end?” and colorful virus illustrations.
A cartoon drawing titled The Punk Rock Spock Prison Pandemic Guide: Attica Edition shows a blue-haired character with Spock-like ears and hand gesture, wearing a shirt that says RAMONES.
