Chloe Garcia Roberts

Chloe Garcia Roberts is a poet and translator living in the Boston area. Her poems and translations have most recently appeared in the Harvard Review Online, Poetry International, Interim and Cerise Press and a book of her translations from the Chinese will be published by New Directions in 2014. She is associate curator of the Woodberry Poetry Room at Harvard and an editor of Zoland Poetry.

On Translating Li Shangyin

To read Li Shangyin’s poetry is to be beautifully disoriented. It is to encounter a unique lyricism comprised of layer upon layer of mythological, historical, and symbolist imagery all the more startling for its deviation from generally held assumptions about Classical Chinese poetry, namely, that it is all spare precision and philosophical naturalism.
