(NEW YORK)–This Sat., Sept. 24, PEN America, the Venezuelan American Caucus, and Cubanos Pa’lante will host an in-person panel discussion and community talkback to promote informed civic engagement, local journalism, community media, and solutions to mis-and disinformation.

The event, “Choosing Community: Toward a Civic and Informed South Florida,” starts at 11:30 am EDT at Sanctuary of the Arts, and will feature a public conversation about civic empowerment, local journalism, in-language community media, and building community resilience to disinformation. The pane, which will feature community leaders, activists, and local journalists, will focus on how civic engagement, positive messaging, and psychology can help stop targeted disinformation, especially ahead of the midterm elections.

Panelists will include: Wilkine Brutus, WLRN reporter and host; Tamoa Calzadilla, managing editor, Factchequeado; Eduardo Gamarra, professor of political science at Florida International University; Johnson Ng, United Chinese News of Florida; Ana Sofía Peláez, Miami Freedom Project; Cynthia Perez, co-founder of Cubanos Pa’lante; Evelyn Pérez-Verdia of We are Mas, and Amore Rodriguez of Cubanos Pa’lante. A moderated discussion will take place in the first half, followed by an audience Q&A. A light breakfast will precede the event.
