Novelist William Gass was a dear friend and valued supporter to PEN America, from his receipt of the 2000 PEN/Nabokov Prize for Fiction to his annotations of the bleak, darkly comic masterpiece The Tunnel for the 2014 First Editions/Second Thoughts Auction. His loss will be felt throughout PEN America and the entire literary community.
Gass’s wife and daughter have generously requested that gifts in lieu of flowers be made to support PEN America’s ongoing work to nurture creativity and defend free expression—efforts for which Gas shared our passion. You can make your gift in memory of William Gass below, then read his poignant 2005 essay “Lifetimes Out of Moments” here.
