On 9 July, 33 press freedom and media development organisations met in London in advance of the Global Media Freedom Conference to call on all participating States to ensure the protection and safety of all journalists and media workers in compliance with their existing obligations and international standards.
The group, representing and working with hundreds of thousands of journalists and media workers, said new pledges will only be credible if States immediately:
- Release all imprisoned journalists;
- Stop killing, attacking and denigrating journalists;
- Investigate and prosecute all murders of journalists.
The group demands all States hold themselves and their counterparts accountable and show demonstrable progress. Several States attending the Conference currently have journalists in prison and unsolved murders.
The group put forth 11 recommended commitments for States attending the Global Media Freedom Conference, hosted by the governments of the United Kingdom and Canada (see below).
Le 9 juin 2019, 33 organisations de défense de la liberté d’expression et de développement de médias se sont réunies à Londres, en amont de la Global Media Freedom Conference, afin d’appeler les Etats présents à assurer la protection et la sécurité de tous les journalistes et collaborateurs de médias, conformément à leurs obligations et aux standards internationaux.
Le groupe, travaillant avec des milliers de journalistes et de collaborateurs de médias à travers le monde, a déclaré qu’un nouvel Engagement (Pledge) ne pourrait être crédible qu’à la condition que les Etats signataires :
- Libèrent immédiatement tous les journalistes emprisonnés
- Cessent de tuer, attaquer et dénigrer les journalists;
- Enquêtent-sur ces actes, en poursuivant tous les responsables d’assassinats de journalistes.
Le groupe exige que les Etats prennent leurs responsabilités et fasse preuve de leurs progrès. Certains de ceux qui assistent à la Conférence détiennent actuellement des reporters en prison, et n’ont toujours pas enquêté sur l’assasinat de journalistes.
Le groupe fait 11 recommendations à destination des Etats qui assistent à la Global Media Freedom Conference, organisée par les gouvernements du Royaume-Unis et du Canada (voir ci-dessous).
