Writer and pro-Kurdish politician Demirtaş has been unconstitutionally jailed since 2016. In March 2021, he was convicted for insulting President Erdoğan in remarks from 2015. In October 2022, he was sentenced to an additional two years and six months in prison for “targeting public officials.” He was sentenced to 42 more years for “terror” in May 2024 and 2.5 years in July for “insult.” He remains incarcerated facing ongoing legal proceedings.
