Rida Benotmane served a prison sentence from 2007 to 2011 for online posts. He was re-arrested on September 9, 2022 for various online comments, including Facebook posts that called for a public march against abuses by security forces and two Youtube videos denouncing authorities for ignoring the people’s demands for social justive. The next day, Benotmane was charged with multiple offenses including “disparaging public officials.” On November 7, 2022, he was sentenced to three years in prison and a fine of 5,000 dirhams, but his sentence was reduced to 18 months in February 2023. Benotmane was released in March 2024.
