Ragıp Zarakolu has a catalog of indictments against him dating back to the early 1970s. He has lived in exile in Sweden since 2012 but continues to face legal harassment from the Turkish government. In September 2018, the Turkish government formally requested his extradition, which was rejected by the Supreme Court of Sweden in December. Later that month, Turkish authorities seized Zarakolu’s assets and confiscated his pension benefits. In May 2022, Türkiye once again requested Zarakolu’s extradition, which Sweden rejected, as part of Sweden’s NATO membership negotiation.
