Zarakolu is a veteran free expression activist and publisher against book bans, resulting in a catalog of indictments against him dating back to the early 1970s. He has lived in exile in Sweden since 2012 but continues to face legal harassment from the Turkish government. In May 2022, Türkiye requested Sweden extradite Zarakolu as part of Sweden’s NATO membership negotiation.
