In 2014, Mohamed Cheikh ould Mohamed Mkhaïtr was sentenced to death for writing an article, in which he argued that Muaritania’s caste system was not justified by the teachings of the prophet Mohammed. He was unexpectedly released on July 29, 2019, seemingly at the request of then-president Mohamed Ould Abdel Aziz, shortly before his tenure. Since his release, Mkhaïtr has been living in exile in France.
