A former sports journalist in Nicaragua, Miguel Mendoza Urbina began publishing his dissident political opinions on Twitter and Facebook where he has a significant following. On June 21, 2021, Urbina was detained on vague charges with no evidence. On February 16, 2022, he was sentenced to nine years in prison, charged with “conspiracy to undermine national integrity” and “disseminating false news.”
