A musician, Mihigo was found dead in his prison cell on February 17, 2020. The official statement from the government stated that his death was a suicide was met with skepticism by human rights groups and supporters. Mihigo had been serving a 10-year sentence for allegedly plotting to kill President Paul Kagame and for inciting hate against the government. He was pardoned in 2018, but was arrested by security forces again on February 13, 2020.
