In late December 2021, novelist Rukirabashaija was detained for a month on charges of “offensive communication” over tweets criticizing President Museveni and his son. After his release, he fled Uganda to seek medical treatment for abuse he suffered while in custody. Rukirabashaija had previously been arrested twice over his books seen as critical of Museveni and human rights violations in Uganda.
