A sociologist and former columnist for the independent newspaper Cumhuriyet, Aysever was arrested in March 2021 for “provoking the public to hatred and hostility” by tweeting a political cartoon that appeared to criticize conservative Muslims in Türkiye. Released after one day, his column was terminated a few weeks later. In December 2021, he was sentenced to 9 months in prison, later reduced to a fine.
