A former editor-in-chief of Cumhuriyet, Dündar has been subjected to multiple trials and convictions due to his investigative reporting. In May 2016, he was sentenced to five years and ten months in prison for “obtaining and disclosing classified documents related to state security.” Although he was released pending appeal, he faced further charges, including espionage. In December 2020, Dündar was convicted in absentia to 27 years and six months in prison. Since relocating to Germany in 2016, he has continued his journalistic work, but remains targeted by Turkish authorities.
