Altan was detained after the 2016 coup attempt on spurious charges. After his life sentence was reduced to 10.5 years, he was released in 2019, but was promptly rearrested. A 2021 European Court ruling that his rights had been violated led to his release. In March 2022, he was sentenced to 3.5 years in prison. He was sentenced to over 6 years in prison for “aiding an organization” in February 2024.
