Aatish Taseer, a U.S.-based writer of Indian origin, faced online harassment from the Indian Ministry of Home Affairs following his May 2019 TIME cover story profiling Prime Minister Narendra Modi titled “India’s Divider in Chief.” In September 2019, Taseer recieved notice that the Indian government intended to revoke his Overseas Citizenship of India (OCI) documentation. His OCI card was officially cancelled in November, preventing his travel back to India. He became a US citizen in 2020.
