Chen Guidi and Wu Chuntao’s prize-winning book Will the Boat Sink the Water? was banned in China after selling more than 250,000 copies. An estimated 10 million copies were then sold illegally. Subsequently, the authors have been harassed in the courts, lost their jobs, and even had their homes stoned—all because they dared to present a realistic portrait of the life of China’s peasants. They will talk to Erik Eckholm, former New York Times Beijing Bureau Chief.
