Elmo Chattman, Jr.

Elmo Chattman, Jr. (1957-2021) was incarcerated for thirty-three years within the California State Prison System. During his years at San Quentin, he was a student of Judith Tannenbaum. In 1989, he earned a B.A. degree in Journalism from Antioch University, becoming one of the first three students to earn an undergraduate degree while incarcerated in San Quentin State Prison in its 137-year history. Elmo was a published poet, short story writer, and served as a reporter and then editor of the San Quentin News.
