Over 40 years ago Yoshihiro Tatsumi expanded the horizons for storytelling in comics by using the visual language of manga to tell gritty, literary stories about the private lives of everyday people. Adrian Tomine, who has helped bring Tatsumis work to American readers—and whose graphic novel Shortcomings was hailed as pitchperfect and daring in The New York Times—will speak with Tatsumi about the evolution of comics in Japan, the U.S., and around the world.
