Susan Bernofsky

Susan Bernofsky directs the literary translation program in the School of the Arts MFA Writing Program at Columbia University. She has translated over twenty books, including seven by the great Swiss-German modernist author Robert Walser, Kafka’s The Metamorphosis, Hesse’s Siddhartha, and most recently The End of Days by Jenny Erpenbeck. Her awards include the 2015 Independent Foreign Fiction Prize, the 2015 Oxford Weidenfeld Translation Prize, the 2015 Ungar German Translation Award, a Guggenheim Fellowship, the Helen and Kurt Wolff Translator’s Prize, and the 2012 Calw Hermann Hesse Translation Prize. In celebration of Women in Translation Month, Translationista invited a number of publishers to select one book each by a female author to be offered as part of a special WIT Month promotion.

Translating for the Stage

Once again hotINK at the Lark will partner with the PEN American Center on a special translation event: Translating the Spoken Word: a Proper Challenge. The panel event will showcase excerpts of other works from the three participating playwrights. In an effort to bring attention to the challenges of theatrical translation, two translators will have translated each excerpt, and actors will read the excerpts aloud, followed by a conversation prompted by the different interpretations.

Translation at Book Expo America 2014

This year, literary translation is the master theme of BEA (Book Expo America). Usually it’s the literature of one particular country that provides the focus for what, in BEA lingo, is known as the Global Market Forum, but this year the Global Market Forum’s title is “Books In Translation: Wanderlust for the Written Word.”
