Nilüfer Göle was born in Turkey in 1953.
She is the author of The Forbidden Modern: Civilization and Veiling and she is professor of sociology at the Ecole des Hautes Etudes in Paris. Her sociological approach also has produced a broader critique of Eurocentrism with regard to emerging Islamic identities at the close of the 20th century. She has explored the complexities of the encounter and the interpenetrations between Europe and Islam in a recent publication in French.
