J. Michael Stanfield, Jr. was born in Nashville in 1970. He has been serving a life sentence since 1993. For all but two of the past 18 years, he worked for the prison newspaper, The Only Voice, mostly as an editor. In his writing, he strives for “worthwhile and profound existential expression.” He hopes to produce “depraved erotica” and “survive alcoholism (or not, a la a redneck Hemmingway).” In addition to writing, he spends time playing the guitar, reading classic literature, watching PBS and Family Guy.
