Catharine R. Stimpson

Catharine R. Stimpson is Dean Emerita and Professor Emerita at New York University. Before NYU, she served as Director of the Fellows Program at the MacArthur Foundation. She taught at Rutgers, The State University of New Jersey-New Brunswick, where she was also Dean of the Graduate School and Vice Provost for Graduate Education. Her academic career began at Barnard College. There she was the founding editor of Signs: Journal of Women in Culture and Society. She has written extensively about women and gender; literature; the humanities; academic freedom; and the university. In 1990, she was the President of the Modern Language Association. She is now a member of the board of directors of several educational, philanthropic, and cultural organizations. Stimpson hosts an interview program with leading cultural figures, “The Skirball Tapes,” through the Skirball Center at New York University.
