(NEW YORK)– On Tuesday, June 21st, PEN America and the Venezuelan American Caucus will host a virtual event to empower and prepare Spanish-language voters in the lead-up to the 2022 midterm elections with skills to recognize and stop misinformation.

WHAT:  “Tu Tienes El Poder: Defeat Disinformation in Your Community,”

WHEN: Tuesday, June 21st, 2022

WHERE: Zoom Meeting

Former Congresswoman Debbie Mucarsel-Powell of Florida will frame the discussion at the top of the media literacy workshop, followed by a panel discussion with Guy Mentel (Global Americans), Andrea Mercado (Florida Rising), Tamoa Calzadilla (El Detector and Factchequeado), Liz Lebrón (Latino Anti-Disinformation Lab, a joint project between Voto Latino and Media Matters for America), and moderated by Samuel Vilchez Santiago (Venezuelan American Caucus).

The event, “Tu Tienes El Poder: Defeat Disinformation in Your Community,”  starts at 7p.m. EDT, online, and will offer a comprehensive look at disinformation: terminology (misinformation, disinformation, and malinformation) and psychology: tips for communicating with family and friends who believe misinformation without sacrificing your own mental health; the flow and evolution of misinformation between countries and social media platforms, closed messaging apps, and radio shows.

Participants will learn strategies for uplifting credible, culturally attuned, in-language news and information. The goal is to empower participants with communication strategies for expressing the value of media literacy as a leader and trusted messenger in their communities

The workshop will be offered in English and Spanish via live Zoom interpretation.
