Date: Thursday, May 6, 2021
Time: 7:00pm ET / 4:00pm PT
Location: Zoom
Donation to Attend: $125 per person

Join us for a special conversation with director Barry Jenkins on his upcoming Amazon series, The Underground Railroad.

Jenkins, an Academy Award-winning writer and director, in his latest vision brings The Underground Railroad to life. In this adaptation of Colson Whitehead’s 2017 Pulitzer Prize-winning novel of the same name, Jenkins excels. Bringing his unique talent and creative vision to a story already brimming with life and energy, he elevates what is already a masterpiece to something more. This series joins Jenkins’s filmography in a unique position—like If Beale Street Could Talk, it is an adapted historical drama that challenges and interrogates mainstream interpretations of the past; like Moonlight, it is a visually powerful and exciting look at an intimate cast of unique characters—but it does not simply reimagine or combine elements from his past work. Instead, under Jenkins’s direction, The Underground Railroad is reimagined in a light neither wholly estranged nor too familiar to the rest of his oeuvre. We are honored to be joined by Jenkins to get a sneak peek at the series and to discuss the power and opportunity of filmmaking and adaptation.

A $125 donation is required to attend this very special evening. This donation is considered 100 percent tax-deductible and supports PEN America’s mission to defend writers and free expression at a time of unprecedented need. Your generosity is deeply appreciated.
