In March 2007, while on assignment in southern Afghanistan, Italian reporter Daniele Mastrogiacomo was kidnapped by the Taliban. He was moved from one improvised prison to the next over a dozen times during his captivity, and was forced to witness the decapitation of his interpreter when negotiations for his and his collaborators’ release stalled. He talks about his experience, about the relationships that formed between him and his captors, about the war in Afghanistan and the rise of the new Taliban, with veteran foreign correspondent and La Repubblica’s New York bureau chief, Federico Rampini.
