Rising literary figure and journalist Álvarez returned to Cuba in November 2020 to support the San Isidro Movement. Upon returning, he was subject to multiple brief detentions and prolonged house arrest by the authorities for his critical opinions. Though he left Cuba in early 2021, he has continued to write about sociopolitical issues. He was prevented from re-entering from the United States in November 2022.
