In 2014, Farghadani was sentenced to over 12 years in prison for a cartoon she drew to criticize a family planning law, which depicted lawmakers as animals. Her sentence was extended for ‘indecent contact’ for shaking hands with her male lawyer. She was released in 2016 on appeal. Farghadani was rearrested in June 2023, likely because of her artistic work. She was released but rearressted in April 2024.
