An investigative journalist and author of the book Plata como cancha, Acosta was sued for defamation by presidential candidate Cézar Acuña after his book was published. In his book he exposed alleged corruption, vote-buying, and plagiarism. A criminal court foud Acosta guilty and sentenced him to 2 years suspended prison and a US$100K fine. Acuña later dropped the charges and his case was dismissed.
