The plight of the imperiled writer has always been at the heart of PEN America’s work. This week, for the first time in our nearly 100-year history, we issued the Freedom to Write Index, a census count of all the writers who were jailed and detained last year.

Writers are our collective conscience, catalysts of resistance, and navigators toward new and better worlds. This report, and our daily work on behalf of threatened writers sends a message to dictators: We won’t give up. We will remember their words. We will fight until they are free to write again.
