Dissident poet Zhu Yufu served seven years in prison due to his poetry and was released in early 2018. In September 2018, he was briefly detained for “subversion of state power.” In March 2021, his political rights were restored after four years of deprivation from his previous imprisonment. In 2024, Zhu was apprehended by border guards and detained while attempting to cross the China-Vietnam borders to visit his terminally ill sister in Japan, leading to house arrest in Hangzhou. He was not allowed to leave China until July 2024, when he traveled to the U.S. for medical treatment.
