Zay Yar Lwin is a member of the Peacock Generation, a satirical poetry troupe specializing in a type of slam poetry known as Thangyat. While he was initially sentenced to one year in prison under section 505(a) of the Penal Code, his sentence was repeatedly increased throughout 2019 and 2020. His accumulated sentence added up to four and a half years in prison for mocking the military in a performance that was also streamed online. He was ultimately released on April 17, 2021 in a general amnesty.
