Yevhen Bal authored several books about the early years of war in Donbas, drawing on his experience as a retired naval captain in memoirs, and wrote about Russia’s invasion of Ukraine for local press. On March 18, 2022, Russian soldiers raided his house in the suburbs of Mariupol. He was reportedly abused and beaten while in Russian custody for three days. Bal died from his injuries on April 2, 2022.
