Human rights defender Ali was shot by a sniper while at a December 2018 protest in Khartoum. The bullet punctured his lung and remains lodged in his spinal cord. After being arrested in January 2019 by Sudanese security services, Ali was held without charge and spent periods incommunicado detention. His case was submitted to the UN Working Group on Arbitrary Detention, which confirmed his release. He was released on January 31, 2019. As of October 2022, according to his Facebook page, Ali is reportedly living permanently in Dubai.
