Kara-Murza is a journalist, politician, and columnist who has long been targeted for his criticism of the Russian government. He survived two poisoning attempts in 2015 and 2017. He was arrested in April 2022 and charged with disseminating false information about the Russian military. In April 2023, he was sentenced to 25 years in prison on treason charges. He was released in August 2024 in a prisoner exchange.
