Selvanithy was the founder of the feminist journal Tholi and was reportedly critical of the Liberation Tigers of Tamil Eelam’s guerilla (LTTE)’s tactics. These views made her a target of the group, which had a stronghold in the Tamil-dominated regions of Sri Lanka during the civil war. After being abducted by the LTTE in 1991, she was declared executed in 1997. No official reason has been provided for her abduction or execution, and no one has been held accountable for her death. The case remains unresolved.
