On December 13, 2015, Al-Najjar, a Jordanian national, was arrested by authorities for a Facebook post in which he criticized Israel and the UAE. He served nearly four years in prison and was tortured. He was released in February 2019, then died two years later at age 46. He was held in al-Wathba prison in Abu Dhabi, and the effects of torture left life-threatening injuries that contributed to his death.
