Journalist and columnist Sultan Al-Jumairi was detained in September 2018. He was arrested upon returning to Saudi Arabia from Canada, after being assured by authorities that he was not on any wanted list. Since his arrest, he has been subjected to enforced disappearance, with no official charges brought against him, and his whereabouts remain undisclosed. As of late 2023, it was unclear whether he had appeared before a court or been formally charged. In June 2024, reports indicated that he had been released after spending almost six years in prison.
