Varadarajan is an economist, journalist, and author of many books including Gujarat: The Making of a Tragedy. He was targeted by Pegasus spyware multiple times since 2017 for his work. In 2021, India’s Supreme Court ruled that the government could not pursue sedition charges against Varadarajan for his criticism of Indian authorities. However, he has since been a subject of state-sponsored cyber attacks.
