Notable literary writer Sergio Ramirez is an outspoken critic of the Nicaraguan government. He wrote a novel Tongolele no Sabia Bailar in 2021 illustrating the 2018 protests against Ortega’s regime. In September 2021, President Ortega issued a warrant against him, and on February 15, 2023, he was stripped of his Nicaraguan citizenship and forced out of the country. On June 30, 2023, Ortega’s regime confiscated Ramirez’s house, where a cultural and educational center named the Luisa Mercado Foundation had operated from until April, when its legal status was revoked by Ortega.
