Chamanara is a Kurdish singer and activist who has faced repeated cycles of arrest and detention. He was arrested in October 2022 for participating in the Mahsa Jina Amini protests and sentenced in December to five years in prison on charges including “propaganda.” He was temporarily released in January 2023 but was rearrested and detained for a week in January 2024 on additional “propaganda” charges. In March 2024, he was fined and sentenced to three months in prison. He was arrested again in July 2025 and released on bail in September. He was arrested again with his sister in March 2026, and then released on bail in April.
