Cartoonist and columnist Prageeth Ekneligoda was last seen on January 24, 2010, in the suburbs of Colombo. In 2015, the case was transferred to the Criminal Investigations Department, which determined that Ekneligoda was abducted and killed by a military intelligence unit. While 9 military officials were indicted on kidnapping and murder charges in 2019, a commission of inquiry established by President Rajapaksa recommended the acquittal of all accused in the 2020 case. Since his disappearance, Ekneligoda’s family has faced ongoing harassment and threats due to their efforts to find him.
