Saudi scholar and writer Noura al-Qahtani was arrested on July 4, 2021 by officers of the Presidency of State Security for posts on an anonymous Twitter account in which she condemned Saudi human rights violations and called for the release of political figures. On February 16, 2022, she was sentenced to 13 years in prison followed by a 13-year travel ban under terrorism charges. A month later, prosecutors filed an appeal in which they levied additional cybercrime charges as well. As of August 9, 2022, Al-Qahtani has been sentenced to a total of 45 years in prison.
